Conference Report: "Reforming the Administration of Justice in Mexico" / "Reforma de la Justicia en México"

The conference report ("memoria de conferencia") provides a trenchant analysis of some of the most persistent justice-sector challenges confronting Mexico at the start of the administration of Pres. Felipe Calderón. A synthesis of a conference that brought together around two dozen bi-national experts, the report provides summaries of the conference's three keynote talks, including a lecture by José Ramón Cossío Díaz, a presiding justice on the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, as well as analyses of seven panel sessions on subjects encompassing national security, judicial autonomy, transparency and accountability, criminology and statistics, state-level criminal justice reform, legal anthropology and indigenous usos y costumbres, and corruption in law enforcement. The "Reforming the Administration of Justice in Mexico" / "Reforma de la Justicia en México" conference took place Sept. 21-22, 2006, at the Casa de California, Mexico City. The conference was co-organized by the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and the Justice in Mexico Project of the Trans-Border Institute, University of San Diego. Chief sponsor was The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, with The Tinker Foundation providing funding for Justice Cossío's talk.
